There's a dimension of fintech design that almost no design brief mentions — and it affects almost every screen in every fintech product.

People are afraid when they interact with financial products. Not in a dramatic way, but in a persistent, background way that shapes every decision they make. Am I doing this right? Is this safe? What happens if something goes wrong? Can I trust this company with my money?

Design either reduces that background anxiety or amplifies it. And the gap between an anxiety-amplifying design and an anxiety-reducing one is often not a complete redesign — it's a specific phrase, a visible exit path, a time estimate, a fee shown before the commit action.

The most important insight in this lesson: anxiety is reduced by information, not reassurance. 'Your money is safe' is reassurance — it makes a claim without evidence. 'Your money is protected up to £85,000 by the FSCS' is information — it gives the user something specific to hold onto. Information is the anxiety-reduction tool, not emotional language.

Six high-stakes moment types. Six anxiety-reduction patterns. The anatomy of a calm payment confirmation screen. Six rewrite exercises. And a 16-point pre-handoff checklist.

Let's start by identifying the moments where anxiety peaks — and why.
